Quick answer
Quantity breaks on Shopify are tiered prices that fall as a shopper adds more units of one product, shown as a tier selector on the product page. Set them up in four steps: pick products people buy in multiples, set two or three tiers such as buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15% and buy 4 save 20%, keep the single-unit price unchanged, and apply the discount through an app that uses Shopify Functions, such as Releasit Bundles & Upsells, so the price holds at checkout and in Shop Pay. Shopify's built-in automatic discounts can set one quantity threshold per discount but show nothing on the product page.
Key takeaways
- On a $30 product with $12 cost of goods, a 3-pack at 15% off returns $40.50 of margin against $18 for a single unit, 2.25 times as much; a 4-pack at 20% off returns $48.
- Two or three tiers convert best; more than four reduce conversion, according to Releasit's quantity-breaks guide. Tier 1 is always the full single-unit price.
- Shopify's built-in automatic discounts support a "Minimum quantity of items" requirement, but one threshold per discount, no product-page tier widget, and a limit of 25 active automatic discounts per store.
- A bundle app shows the tiers on the product page and applies them through Shopify Functions, which Releasit's help centre says needs the Basic plan or higher. Releasit Bundles & Upsells does this free up to $1,000 a month in extra revenue.
- Shopify applies only one product-class discount per line item unless you are on Shopify Plus, so a sitewide code either replaces the tier or is blocked from it; the Combinations setting on the code decides which.
What are quantity breaks on Shopify?
A quantity break is a price tier tied to how many units of one product a shopper buys: one unit at full price, two at a lower price each, three at a lower price still. On a Shopify store it appears as a selector on the product page, with each tier showing the quantity, the price and the saving, and the chosen tier's discount applied in the cart and at checkout. Merchants use quantity breaks on products bought in multiples, such as skincare, supplements, coffee, socks, pet food and phone accessories, because the shopper decides how many to add and the store never has to pre-build a kit.
The terms overlap, and app listings use them loosely. The table separates them by what the shopper sees.
| Term | What the shopper sees | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity breaks | Two to four tiers for one product on its page; the price per unit falls at each tier | 1 for $30, 2 for $54, 3 for $76.50 |
| Volume discount | The same idea applied in the cart, often across a collection, with no tier selector on the product page | 10% off when 3 or more items from the collection are in the cart |
| Tiered pricing | A price list by quantity band, common in wholesale; each band has its own unit price | 1 to 9 units at $30, 10 to 49 at $25, 50 or more at $21 |
| Buy X get Y (BOGO) | A free or discounted unit once a quantity is reached, rather than a lower price on every unit | Buy 2, get the third free |
| Multipack bundle | A separate product that is a fixed pack of the same item, with its own price and inventory | "3-pack" listed as its own product at $76.50 |
Quantity breaks beat multipack products for most stores because there is one product to manage, one inventory count and one set of reviews, and the shopper can pick any tier without the store creating a product for each.
Why quantity breaks lift average order value
Quantity breaks raise average order value because the second and third units cost the store only their cost of goods, while the discount comes off the full price of every unit. Take a $30 product with $12 cost of goods, a 60% margin.
| Tier | Discount | Price per unit | Order revenue | Cost of goods | Margin per order | Times a single-unit sale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy 1 | 0% | $30.00 | $30.00 | $12.00 | $18.00 | 1.00 |
| Buy 2 | 10% | $27.00 | $54.00 | $24.00 | $30.00 | 1.67 |
| Buy 3 | 15% | $25.50 | $76.50 | $36.00 | $40.50 | 2.25 |
| Buy 4 | 20% | $24.00 | $96.00 | $48.00 | $48.00 | 2.67 |
The catch is the shopper who would have bought three at full price anyway: that order drops from $90 to $76.50 and costs $13.50 of margin. Quantity breaks pay when they move single-unit buyers up a tier more often than they discount buyers who were already loading the cart, which is why the tiers are worth an A/B test on your own traffic rather than copying from a guide, including this one. On a 60% margin product, every tier in the table still clears the single-unit margin from two units up, so the downside is bounded; on a 30% margin product, a 20% discount leaves $3 of margin per unit, and the maths changes.
Two ways to set up quantity breaks on Shopify
Shopify's built-in discounts can set a quantity threshold without an app; a bundle app adds the tier selector on the product page and a ladder of tiers per product. Which one you need depends on whether the shopper should see the tiers before the cart.
| Shopify automatic discount | Bundle app (Releasit Bundles & Upsells) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the shopper sees it | In the cart and at checkout, after the items are added | Tier selector on the product page, then cart and checkout |
| Tiers | One "Minimum quantity of items" threshold per discount; Shopify applies one product-class discount per item unless the store is on Shopify Plus | Two to four tiers in one offer, each with its own price or discount |
| Scope | Specific products, collections or the whole order | One product per offer; one offer per product |
| Limits | 25 active automatic discounts per store, app-based ones included | Plan cap on extra revenue: free to $1,000 a month, $19.99 uncapped |
| Checkout | Native Shopify discount | Applied through Shopify Functions; Releasit's guide says this needs the Basic plan or higher |
| Savings badge, best-deal badge, live preview | No | Yes |
| A/B testing and analytics | No | Yes, on every plan |
| Cost | Included in Shopify | Free up to $1,000 a month in extra revenue, then $4.99 to $19.99 |

Shopify Plus stores can also build their own discount with Shopify Functions, which the Help Center suggests for tiered discounts alongside a discounts app. For everyone else the choice is the two columns above. Other bundle apps build quantity breaks too; our comparison of seven Shopify bundle apps lists which ones, at what price.
How to set up quantity breaks with Releasit Bundles & Upsells
Releasit Bundles & Upsells builds a quantity-break offer in about five minutes per product, after a one-time theme setup. The steps follow the help-centre guides on enabling the app on your storefront and creating a quantity-breaks offer, which have screenshots of each screen.
- Enable the app on your theme (once per theme). From the Releasit Bundles setup guide, open the theme editor, turn on the Releasit Bundles toggle in the App embeds panel and save; then click Add to Product Page, add the Releasit Bundles block to the default product template and save. Without the app embed, offers do not appear on the storefront, and both steps must be repeated if you switch themes.
- Add an offer. In Releasit Bundles, go to the Bundles and Quantity Offers section and click Add Offer.
- Name the offer. Under Basic Information, give it an internal name of up to 150 characters; customers never see it. Use the product name and the tiers, such as "Serum 2/3/4 tiers", so analytics are readable later.
- Select the product. Click Select Products, search, and pick one product. Each offer applies to one product; for a collection, create one offer per product.
- Choose Quantity Breaks under Choose Offer Type.
- Add the tiers. Under Configure Your Offer, add a tier per level with a quantity and a price or discount. Set tier 1 to the full single-unit price, then two or three discounted tiers. The guide's example is 1 for £35.00, 2 for £56.00 (save £14.00) and 3 for £73.50 (save £31.50). For a buy 2 get 1 free tier, set a 3-unit tier with a fixed discount equal to one unit's price, or a 2-unit tier at 50% for "2 for the price of 1", as the offer types guide describes.
- Set the design. Pick a layout under Theme Selection and watch the Live Preview update. Write the Offer Header (the title above the tiers), leave the Savings Badge on (it shows automatically on discounted tiers), put the Best Deal Badge on one tier only, and add any trust line in Footer Settings.
- Check mobile and save. Review the Live Preview in mobile view, click Save, and confirm the offer shows as Active.
- Place a test order. Open the product page, pick the 3-unit tier, go through checkout with Shop Pay and check the order total matches the tier price. The discount is applied through Shopify Functions, and a quantity between tiers gets the nearest lower tier's discount, so four units on a 2-and-3 ladder get the 3-unit discount.
The offer appears on the product page where you placed the block, in the layout you chose; on a product with no active offer the block renders nothing, so the page looks unchanged. Discounted prices also carry through to orders placed through the Releasit COD Form, which matters for cash-on-delivery stores.
How to set a quantity discount with Shopify's built-in discounts
Shopify's own discounts can give a percentage or fixed amount off a product once a minimum quantity is in the cart, with no app and no cost. The shopper does not see a tier on the product page, so pair it with a line in the product description such as "Add 3 and save 15% automatically at checkout".
- In the Shopify admin, go to Discounts and click Create discount.
- Choose Amount off products.
- Under Method, choose Automatic discount and enter a title; the title shows in the cart and at checkout.
- Under Value, choose Percentage or Fixed amount and enter it, then select the products or collections it applies to.
- Under Minimum purchase requirements, choose Minimum quantity of items and enter the quantity. When the discount targets specific products or collections, only those items count toward the quantity.
- Under Combinations, choose which discount classes it may combine with (see the stacking section below). Set active dates and click Save.
Two limits to plan around. A store can have at most 25 active automatic discounts, and app-based discounts count toward that total. And Shopify applies only one product-class discount to an item unless the store is on Shopify Plus, so two automatic discounts with different quantity thresholds on the same product do not form a ladder; build a single threshold this way, or use an app for tiers.
Which tiers and discounts should you use?
Start from two or three tiers whose deepest discount still clears your margin floor, with tier 1 at full price, and test one deeper tier later. The table gives starting points by product type; they are recommendations to test on your own store, not measured results.
| Product type | Starting tiers | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Consumables bought on a cycle (skincare, supplements, coffee, pet food) | Buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15%, buy 4 save 20% | The shopper will use all of them; the tier pulls forward the next two purchases |
| Basics and apparel in sizes (socks, tees, underwear) | Buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 20%, shown as "3 for $X" | A round pack price reads faster than a percentage; let the shopper mix sizes if the app allows |
| Low-price accessories (under $15) | Buy 3 save 15%, buy 5 save 25% | Bigger quantity steps, because a 2-unit tier barely moves the order value |
| Gifts and seasonal items | Buy 2 save 12%, buy 3 save 18% | Shoppers buy for several people; the second tier is the gift for themselves |
| High-ticket items (over $100) | Buy 2 save a fixed $20 to $30 | Percentages give away too much margin on a high price; a fixed amount is enough to tip a second unit |
Three rules hold across product types. Keep the single-unit price unchanged, so the tiers read as a reward rather than a markdown. Make each step in discount smaller than the step in quantity, so the margin per order still rises at every tier. And show the saving in money on the badge, since "Save $13.50" is concrete where "15% off" needs arithmetic.
How to stop quantity breaks stacking with discount codes
Whether a discount code adds to a quantity break is set on the code, in its Combinations section, and the rules are Shopify's. Discounts come in three classes: product discounts on specific items, order discounts on the subtotal, and shipping discounts. All stores can combine product discounts on separate items, but an item can carry only one product-class discount unless the store is on Shopify Plus. Customers can use at most five product or order codes and one shipping code on an order, and an automatic discount combines with a code only when each is set to combine with the other's class.
In practice: Releasit Bundles & Upsells applies its tiers as an automatic product discount through Shopify Functions. If you run a sitewide code such as a 10% welcome code and do not want it on top of the tier, open the code in Discounts and untick product discounts under Combinations; the shopper then gets the tier or the code, not both. If you want a free-shipping code to work alongside the tier, tick shipping discounts on both. Place one test order with the code applied before you rely on either setting.
How to A/B test a quantity break
The only way to know whether buy 3 save 15% beats buy 3 save 20% on your traffic is to split it. Releasit Bundles & Upsells runs A/B tests between two offers on the same product, on every plan, with preset splits of 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20 and 90/10; the help-centre guide walks through the screens.
- Build the challenger as a second offer on the same product that differs in one thing: discount depth, tier count or the best-deal badge position, not all three.
- Create the test. Click A/B Tests in the left sidebar, then Create A/B Test; name it, set an end date, select the product, and set the running offer as Variant A and the challenger as Variant B.
- Split 50/50 on your best-selling product, where there are enough orders to read a result; the guide suggests 80/20 for high-traffic stores that want to limit exposure to an untested offer.
- Run for at least two weeks and about 100 conversions per variant before calling it, so weekday and weekend traffic are both in. The analytics show conversion rate, revenue and orders for each variant; if a variant's product sells out, that variant stops showing and traffic goes to the other.
- Judge on margin per visitor, not conversion rate alone. A deeper discount can win on conversions and lose on margin; the worked example above shows how to compute it.
- Deactivate the loser and write the result down, with the product, the tiers and the dates, so the next test starts from a known baseline.
Five quantity-break mistakes to avoid
- Discounting tier 1. The single unit is the anchor; lowering it lowers every tier's perceived saving and your margin on the shoppers who buy one.
- Five or six tiers. Releasit's guide reports that more than four tiers reduce conversion. Two or three is the norm; add a fourth only when the third is selling.
- Two widgets on one product. Running two bundle apps, or an app and a native multipack product, on the same page confuses shoppers and can stack discounts. Pause one before publishing the other.
- Ignoring the plan cap before a campaign. Revenue-capped apps pause offers at the limit; Releasit Bundles & Upsells honours the order that crosses it, then pauses until you pick a higher plan. Upgrade before Black Friday, not during it.
- Never testing the discount at checkout. One test order through Shop Pay, with and without your sitewide code, catches a stacking or combination problem before a customer does.

What are quantity breaks on Shopify?
Quantity breaks are price tiers on one product that fall as the shopper buys more units: one at full price, two at a lower unit price, three lower still. On a Shopify store they appear as a tier selector on the product page, usually added by a bundle app such as Releasit Bundles & Upsells, and the chosen tier's discount is applied in the cart and at checkout.
Can I set up quantity breaks on Shopify without an app?
Partly. In Discounts, create an Amount off products automatic discount with a Minimum quantity of items requirement, and Shopify applies it in the cart and at checkout. It gives one threshold per discount, shows no tiers on the product page, and an item can carry only one product-class discount unless you are on Shopify Plus, so a ladder of tiers needs an app.
How many tiers should a quantity break have?
Two or three discounted tiers above the full-price single unit. Releasit's quantity-breaks guide reports that two to three tiers work best and more than four reduce conversion. Add a fourth tier only once the third is selling, and put the best-deal badge on one tier only, usually the middle one.
What discount should each quantity-break tier give?
Start from buy 2 save 10%, buy 3 save 15% and buy 4 save 20% for consumables, and a fixed amount such as $20 off two for items over $100. Keep the single-unit price unchanged and make each step in discount smaller than the step in quantity, so margin per order rises at every tier. These are starting points to A/B test, not measured results.
Do quantity breaks work at Shopify checkout and with Shop Pay?
Yes, when the app applies the tier through Shopify Functions, as Releasit Bundles & Upsells does. Shopify calculates the discount at checkout, so it appears on the order, in Shop Pay and in accelerated checkouts without duplicate variants or draft orders. Releasit's help centre notes that Shopify Functions needs the Basic plan or higher. Place one test order to confirm the total.
Do quantity breaks stack with discount codes?
Only if the code allows it. Shopify applies one product-class discount per item unless the store is on Shopify Plus, and a code combines with an automatic discount only when each is set to combine with the other's class. To keep a sitewide code off the tier, open the code in Discounts and untick product discounts under Combinations. Customers can use at most five product or order codes per order.
Can I apply quantity breaks to a whole collection?
With Shopify's built-in automatic discount, yes: target a collection and set a minimum quantity, and only items from that collection count toward it. In Releasit Bundles & Upsells each offer applies to one product, so a collection needs one offer per product, which keeps each product's tiers and badges separate. Bulk creation is not available at the time of writing.
What is the difference between quantity breaks, volume discounts and bundles?
Quantity breaks are tiers on one product, chosen on its page. A volume discount is the same saving applied in the cart, often across a collection, with no selector. A product bundle is a set of different products sold together at one price, and a multipack is a fixed pack of one product listed as its own product. Most bundle apps, including Releasit Bundles & Upsells, build all of these.
How do I know whether quantity breaks are working?
Compare three numbers for the product before and after: orders with more than one unit, average order value, and margin per order using your cost of goods. A rise in average order value with flat margin means the discount is going to shoppers already buying several. Then A/B test discount depth for two weeks or about 100 conversions per variant and keep the tier with the higher margin per visitor.
